Unit Load Cost Optimizer

Compare two pallet configurations on total shipment cost, once partial-pallet rounding and each configuration's material and handling cost are applied.

How this works

A denser pallet configuration looks like the obvious choice once freight is priced per pallet position, but a denser pack often needs reinforced material and more handling, so it is not automatically cheaper per unit shipped. This engine compares two configurations on total shipment cost for the entered order size, pallets needed always rounded up since a partial pallet still occupies a full pallet position, not on the flat per-unit rate alone.

Key terms

  • Unit load cost: the per-pallet cost (material, handling, and freight) divided by units per pallet, the flat rate.
  • Pallets needed: order size divided by units per pallet, rounded up, since a partial pallet still costs a full pallet position.
  • Total shipment cost: pallets needed times per-pallet cost, the figure the verdict actually turns on, not the flat rate alone.

Assumptions

  • Uniform material, handling, and freight cost per pallet for each configuration
  • One shared freight rate per pallet position across both options

Limitations

  • Two configurations only, not an open-ended packing search
  • Does not model truck-level cube or weight constraints

Worked example

Config B packs 50% more units per pallet than Config A (60 vs 40), but its reinforced material and extra handling push its per-pallet cost to $120 versus Config A's $75. Shipping 5,000 units needs 125 pallets of Config A ($9,375 total) or 84 pallets of Config B, rounded up from 83.3 ($10,080 total), so Config A wins by $705 despite being far less dense per pallet.

Common use cases

  • Choosing between two pallet or packaging configurations for a shipment
  • Checking whether a denser, more expensive configuration actually earns its premium
  • Seeing how partial-pallet rounding changes the verdict at a real order size
  • Continuing from Cartons per Pallet Optimizer's configuration into a cost decision
