Bulk vs Racked Storage Comparator

Compare bulk and racked storage on total annual cost once each option's footprint is priced in, not just cost per square foot.

Bulk storage

Racked storage

Racked storage wins$25,000/year
Bulk footprint / cost5,000 sq ft, $40,000/yr
Rack footprint / cost1,250 sq ft, $25,000/yr

How this works

Bulk floor storage costs less per square foot than racked storage, but racking stores far more per square foot by using vertical height, so a lower cost rate does not automatically mean a lower total cost. This engine prices each option's actual required footprint, not just its rate, so the real cost comparison is visible.

Key terms

  • Footprint: the floor space an option actually needs, storage volume divided by its density.
  • Density: how many units an option stores per square foot, the factor that separates bulk from racked storage.

Assumptions

  • One uniform density and cost rate per storage type

Limitations

  • Two storage types only, not a mixed or zoned storage optimizer
  • Does not model racking capital depreciation separately from its all-in cost per square foot

Worked example

Storing 10,000 units, bulk storage's $8/sq ft rate looks far cheaper than racking's $20/sq ft. But racking's 4x density (8 units/sq ft versus bulk's 2) means it only needs 1,250 square feet against bulk's 5,000, $25,000/year against $40,000/year. Racking wins despite costing 2.5 times more per square foot.

Common use cases

  • Choosing a storage approach for a given volume before committing warehouse space
  • Checking whether a cheaper per-square-foot rate is actually the cheaper total cost
  • Continuing from Warehouse Capacity Planner's space utilization into a storage-method decision
